Darren Ang is a Singapore-based Youtuber and freelance musician, specializing in arranging for piano.
Darren’s experience in music projects began while he was undergoing his pre-university education at Anglo-Chinese School (Independent). He took up several small music projects in his first few years at the school, and was gradually commissioned for larger- and larger-scale projects, which culminated in his arrangement of the school anthem for symphony orchestra and choir for the school’s 130th Founder’s Day Service. Subsequently, after his graduation, Darren returned to help the school with some of its largest-scale artistic projects - in 2017, he was commissioned to compose an original electronic work for the school’s Dance Venia performance at the Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation, and in 2018, he was commissioned to orchestrate a complete set of backing tracks for the school’s musical, “The Prince of Egypt”, which was also the first full musical production ever attempted by a secondary school in Singapore.
Darren is trained in classical piano performance, musicology and music theory, and his educational achievements include a Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music diploma in piano performance, as well as a 7-point score in Higher Level Music, with an A in his Music Extended Essay, for the International Baccalaureate November 2015 examinations. Darren was also a quarter-finalist in the National Piano and Violin Competition 2015 (Piano Senior category).
Despite his involvement in large-scale music projects and love for classical performance, Darren finds his enjoyment in arranging for the piano and recording short covers. He currently runs a Youtube channel where he uploads two video-game-music (VGM) piano covers a week, with the channel’s focus being on accessibility and simplicity. His arranging philosophy is that complex tracks should be reduced to simple arrangements as much as possible, by applying sound music theory and finding creative solutions. Additionally, he believes in making his arrangements both free-to-download and easy-to-access, and all his arrangements are available for free on his website at DarrenAngVGM.com.
Currently, Darren in his first year of the LL. B. (Hons) Programme at the National University of Singapore, where he actively engages in extra-curricular legal research and writes for the school’s student-run journal.
